My First Boot Maintenance
Tips for cleaning Your First Boots
a) After play, always undo velcro to allow easy removal of your boots (Don’t slip them off using the heel!).
b) Remove loose dirt by banging your boots together or by hitting the soles on a hard floor.
Then clean with a dripping wet cloth.Do not use a cleaning agents to clean your boots.
Do not use a wire brush as this will damage them, instead try and use a brush with bristles made from a natural material. You can use an old toothbrush which is the most practical idea as bristles are soft enough not to damage, plus a cheap renewable source as you change your toothbrush every 6 months.
c) Wipe the football boots with a damp cloth to remove smaller particles of dirt.
e) Stuff the football boots with newspaper to maintain shape and to help extract any moisture. If the boots are very wet, you may need to replace the newspaper daily.
f) Allow the football boots to dry in a natural heat.
Warning: Drying the boots with heat can cause the football boots to become stiff and uncomfortable. Stiff boots are far more likely to rip and are weak. Deteriorated adhesives can make joints weak, such as the join between the upper and the sole plate. Additionally, if you find your boots are stiff soak them in a bowl of water and start the process above.
g) Once dry, grease the studs, ‘Vaseline’ or a little ‘WD40’ is good for this. This will prevent rusting if the studs are screw-in, it will also help prevent soil from sticking to the studs causing odours. Ensure the stud is tight, but not too tight to damage the thread or over tight causing the thread to put pressure on the sole.
h) Leather boots should be polished to retain their suppleness and water resistance.
i) After allowing the polish to work in, typically 24 hours, the boot should be protected by a Dubbin or natural leather oil. Dubbin or oil, helps keep the football boot waterproof and the leather supple.
Warning: When cleaning boots made from synthetic material*, do not use a Dubbin or oil. Use a damp cloth and towel dry before leaving to dry out naturally.
* Non leather light weight materials
